As my parents explained to me many, many times, my birth was a true epic. The mother started to feel the first contractions around nine in the evening. It was a night of great thunder. Lightning and thunder lit up the sky, and a great deluge fell. The father, in a hurry, went to find the midwife. Pepita, my sister, was ten years old. It was a quarter past ten, and I hadn't taken my head off yet when the light went out. Currents, heating water and searching for candles. It was at quarter past ten when, with a loud heavenly thunder, water falling on the dojo, and the light of candles, I made my entrance into this world.

In 1956, at the age of eleven, he left primary school and start working as a wall painter with his father. In the afternoons he attended drawing and painting lessons given by the Catalan painter Josep Alumà Sanz in Barcelona. In September 1960, three months after having finished his studies there, he entered the Fine Art School in Barcelona. In 1964 he completed his degree at the School. Later he got his Master's in art and in technical architecture.
