SCULPTURES HEADS AND BUSTS MADE BY RODRÍGUEZ-AMAT

This series of sculptures, all portraits of people associated with me, has been made over many years.

I considers my plastic work free of all spirit of submission and, consequently, the creative action is generated with absolute freedom. However, sometimes I want to undergo a rigorous action without being carried away by the freedom that characterizes me, and I makes portraits with all kinds of techniques where, I, not only submits to the forms and features of the characters, but also wants to capture the psychology of the portrait. In this series of busts you can see those portraits made with sculptural techniques. There is, in this same website, the section Portraits and Self-Portraits where you will find works made with many and very different artistic techniques.

This series of sculptural heads and busts has been created according to the traditional method. In other words, the first step was to work with clay before plastering the bust. This work is always very laborious. It requires constantly analyzing the shape of each and every part of the head. Profile, distances, volumes, facial expression, etc. etc. At the same time, with the palettes, the volume of all these parts is given: face, ears, eyes, hair, etc. etc. This work requires many, many hours of concentration as small differences from the model would lead to the dissimilarity of the portrait. After this process, it is necessary to make the mold with plaster and then proceed to fill it in order, once dry, to polish it and leave it ready to turn to bronze.

At the upper part of this page you will find a link to see the process of making a bust.

I always states that the portrait, made with any plastic technique, is always a drawing process. It can be drawn, I say, with pencil, charcoal, brush and, of course, clay. I have constantly stated that all kinds of plastic works, whether they are free of any kind or not, require drawing. Drawing is the basis for structuring the shape of the work.
