About Friedhelm Kobecke's work
"All genuine art is abstract". This statement by the American Philosopher Susanne K. Langer has been for Friedhelm Kobecke the decisive point of anchorage for his mode of painting. The schematized shapes usually called "abstractions" in painting present a very striking technical device for achieving artistic abstraction, but the result is neither more nor less abstract than any successful work in the great tradition, or for that matter in any tradition whatever. The abstraction in Friedhelm Kobecke's art has no technical formula which carries the entire pattern from one level of abstraction to another, as progressive generalization of proportions does when it is exercised simultaneous on all the terms or all the constituent relations of a given order in a system. It has, in fact, no series of successive levels of abstractness to be reached by all elements in the symbolic projection at the same time. The plastic arts find natural models everywhere. Nature is full of individual characteristic forms and a painter using colours and making designs on his canvas naturally recalls some objects to give sense to the shapes that produce themselves under his hand. These factors may, indeed, be materials for artistic conception, but they are not the conception itself, they offer no criterion of excellence. A subject which has emotional meaning for the artist may thereby rivet his attention and cause him to see its form with a discerning active eye, and keep that form present in his excited imagination until its highest reaches of significance are evident to him, in figure or abstractness, then he will have, and will paint, a deep concept of abstraction of it. Not the importance of the theme nor the accuracy of its depiction, nor the fantasies stirred in the beholder, make a work of art significant, but the articulation of visual forms, which Friedhelm Kobecke would call its "melody". |
