Monsters Beasts and Chimeras 2012
There are creators who do not consider their cerebral reflections at the moment of artistic creation as a pathway to self-knowledge. These are creators for whom creative work is a pure and sensitive act. Often they are not even interested in understanding the process used in their work. There are other creators who cannot stop thinking about what they do even though they know that absolute knowledge is not possible. They also know that it is difficult if not impossible to define the significance of artistic creation. This series of works has been titled Monsters and Chimeras by Rodriguez-Amat but this title has no other purpose than to catalogue this series of works. These paintings have their origin in Rodríguez-Amats strong desire of to be absolutely free of all concessions towards the viewer. This freedom, in spite of being a limited freedom, has been a concept that Rodríguez-Amat has maintained as a principle of action throughout his artistic career. The artist, we all know, cannot simply remove from himself the prior influences of his environment, of recent or long past art history. It is not possible to be free of all the perceptions, conversations, or lessons experienced by the individual and, even less, from what has occurred and is occurring around him. However, even though the artist is subjected to continual outside influences, he can make the choice to not consider the tastes of others, of possible artistic recognition or even the possibility of selling the work. Rodríguez-Amat believes that freedom from these considerations has always been inherently good for the resulting work. These images, that some people might consider distasteful, are only the means that have allowed Rodríguez-Amat total freedom at the moment of creativeness. The artist could have transformed these images into female figures full of lightness and elegance if this had been his desire. It was not. The goal was only to fulfil the personal desire that the creative action requested of him. These works shout out and proclaim the freedom to which Rodríguez-Amat clings. Nevertheless this freedom does not oblige him to not seek out conceptual, aesthetic or other kinds of values that the creator might consider. Technically, these works were painted on paper with many different materials. This mixed media work includes charcoal, Indian ink, acrylic colours, resins, watercolours, various kinds of fixers and varnishes, as well as other materials. The breadth of his technical knowledge allows Rodríguez-Amat great freedom in his use of materials. Art is the deepest expression of the individual. Rodríguez-Amat himself considers that these paintings may hurt certain sensibilities. And he asks himself how is it possible to be able to create these monsters at a time of his life without any personal problems? We leave the spectator to ponder this last aspect. |
